Most students admitted that it was a minor scuffle between two students which was “unnecessarily blown out of proportionâ€�.Hindu Hostel sees a mad scramble among IC and SFI at the time of admissions to bring in freshers to their fold. “Even if there’s a minor scuffle between rival unions in the hostel, it snowballs into a major conflict on Presidency College campus.In 90 per cent of the cases it becomes a prestige issue between the unions,â€� said Deep Narayan Chakraborty, a third year PG student and a Hindu Hostel boarder. I have already apologised for the misbehaviour of our member,â€� said Sujoy Ray, general secretary, Presidency College, Students Union.Most students admitted that Hindu Hostel was enjoying an “undeservedâ€� status in Calcutta University politics. All this to appease the students and to restore their tainted image.Both Independents’ Consolidation and the Students Federation of India said they had actually asked the principal not to close down the college for a “minor incidentâ€� at Hindu Hostel.“We don’t want the college to be closed due to what happened at the hostel. Students are reportedly angry with the boarders of Hindu Hostel where a scuffle between two students forced the principal to close down the college on Thursday.Pushed to the wall, both the unions pressed the authorities to reopen the college on Friday. I asked my wife not to panic and switched on the television set. “The caller said that we shouldn’t worry as efforts are on to get him released. He was getting ready for office around 8.30am on Monday when he received a call from Infosys. Around 8.30am (Sydney time), Pushpendu had gone entered the café that day,” Pushpal, an electrical engineer, said. On certain days, he would prepare his own breakfast while on others he goes to this café in central Sydney. He will visit home during Saraswati Puja in 2015. “The last time he visited home was during the Pujas in 2013. ![]() In February this year, he was made project manager and transferred to Sydney. In 2009, he was promoted and left for Melbourne, Australia. In 2002, he passed civil engineering from an institute in Pune and joined Infosys the next year. Pushpendu is an only child and studied till Class-XII at the St Thomas School in Howrah. Pushpendu remained still by thinking of the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, he told his parents,” said childhood friend Bhaskar Gopal Chatterjee. He said that he wasn’t tortured but none of the hostages were granted access to food or water during 17 hours they were held hostage. “He called up home around 1.30pm on Tuesday. The 34-year-old techie, when he spoke to his parents on Tuesday afternoon, said that it was Swami Vivekananda’s thoughts that kept him alive. It was pure torture for us for the next 12 hours,” his father Pushpal Kumar Ghosh said on Tuesday. “A chill ran down my spine when I received a call from Infosys, informing us that Pushpendu had been taken hostage.
